My sister is a 5th grade math teacher. Recently, I volunteered to help her out. I noticed when the students complained that something was too difficult....or they couldn't do something....she would stop them....look them in the eye & say....YET! She even did it to me...when I said out loud, "I'm not good at math" & she said..."You mean you're not good at math YET"! After school I asked her about this. She shared with me that there has been much research on the Power of Yet! One school started grading on PROCESS instead of CORRECTNESS. The students improved rapidly. The students even wanted to be challenged more! There is now an on-line math game that rewards the PROCESS instead of getting the right answers now! Another result from these studies has shown that when these students get out of their comfort zone they have measured brain growth!
This is so exciting to me as a life coach. So many times I hear "I can't do it" or "I'm not good at that" or "I don't want to".....myself included! But now....I tell myself & my clients....NOT YET! I don't think any of us like or want to get out of our comfort zone....but if it improves our brain...that's just another motivator! Let's celebrate our efforts, strategy, & progress....instead of focusing on our shortcomings, failures, & obstacles. Even small improvements are still wins! And...just like these students....when we see growth....even slight growth....& applaud it instead of being discouraged by faster improvement ...it motivates us forward!
One of our problems is the "instant" society we live in! We're so conditioned to have it ALL .... NOW! Hey...I'm guilty too...I love having my Keurig coffee without having to put any effort into making an entire pot! (But when I do....yummy....so much better!) Amazon has made a fortune on this....everything available as fast as you want it! I want to work out once & be back in shape! ;) But you know the quote..."The best things are worth waiting for!" The effort is part of the journey....and just because I'm not back in shape after one work-out...it just means I'm not back in shape YET....if I am persistent I will be!
So....when I see slow improvement, no production, failure, lack...I can still be encouraged...because all it means is that it is NOT YET!
The next time you have one of these negative thoughts, or hear someone say something self-defeating....remember.........YET! This is a great lesson to teach your children while they are young. I am a part time nanny for 2 year old twins & we sometimes watch Sesame Street...just like my own daughters did many years ago. Take a minute and watch this video (with your children if possible) of the Power of Yet!
